I think that reaction is explained through the spanish civil war. Barcelona was a stronghold of the second republic while germany supported the facists.

You recon the waiter was a civil war vet ? Or had a grandpa in gernica ? Maybe that's overestimating the history awareness of that guy... did you wear the wrong football club colours ?

I remember my father telling me he was quite welcome in barcelonas pubs - and that was the 50ies.
